Naptime 2 & 3

Bedtime at night in the newly converted bed has continued to be a success. By night time Zack is all but ready to go to bed. He doesn't even make a peep when we lay him down.

Naptime is still proving to be a challenge.

Naptime #2 in the new converted bed:

DID NOT GO WELL.

Zack had been in his room for close to an hour after I put him to bed. I thought all had gone well. I was very proud of myself. But when I opened to door to peek on Zack he wasn't in his crib. So I opened the door wider to look in the closet and he wasn't there. I did find him sitting in his chair WIDE AWAKE. The kid hadn't even slept! So I took him back to bed and told him it was naptime. He said bye bye with a wave and a smile so I left. I think he gets that this naptime not play time. So off I went. Only to return a few minutes later to the sound of his closet door being opened. After a few more attempts Zack finally came out of his room. He was wake the rest of the night. He doesn't even act tired! So I thought his naptimes were over.

Naptime #3 in the newly converted bed (Wed):

I figured that if Zack wasn't going to take a nap he'd have to spend an hour in his room. Maybe he'd "get" the reason he was in there. Plus I'd get some stuff done too. After about 30 minutes I went in to check on him and this is what I found

He is such a character. He probably sat in the chair waiting for me to check on him and fell asleep. I wonder what would happen if tomorrow I took the chairs out? I love this kid so much. He makes every day an adventure!

Big Boy Bed!

Saturday Bob converted Zack's crib into a toddler bed.

Zack was pretty excited about the fact that he could play in his bed now. Right away he threw all his balls into his bed. He had a blast shooting baskets from his bed. Zack has started taking anyone that he can into his room to "sit" on a stool and watch him play. It's the funniest thing, he takes the person by the hand into his room, points at the stool and says "sit". He then will either play with his toys or he'll start piling toys on that person's lap. Saturday it was my mom's turn to sit. He would throw the balls into the hoops that were set up around his bed then have her fetch the balls. He also loved jumping on his "new" bed.
I was a little nervous about how the toddler bed would work. With this new found freedom I worry that we'll never keep him in bed! Saturday night actually worked out really well. Since my Mom was over he completely wore himself out. He didn't even fuss when we layed him down for the night.

Sunday is a little hard for us because our church is right in the middle of Zacks naptime. We have church from 1:00 to 4:00pm; Zack's naps are usually from 12:00 to 3-4:00. This Sunday we didn't try to do a early nap because it's hard enough for us to get to church on time, we didn't want to worry about having to wake him up. So we skipped nap. But by the time we were on our way home the little guy was exhausted. So we layed him down for a nap after church and he just crashed.

So far bedtime aren't a hassle with his new bed and the one nap was a success.

Today (Monday) has been a different story. After lunch I took Zack to his room for naptime and layed him down with his blankets. He's a good listener and layed down just like I told him to. Then I went back into the living room to attend to Gavin. A few minutes later I could hear Zack trying to get out of his room, so I went in and put in back in bed and explained that it was nap time. About 5 minutes later out walked our little boy. So back into bed he went. This time he was getting a little weepy and starting to sniffle. I sat down with him and explained that it was nap time and he needed to stay in bed. Then back into the living room I went. Zack started crying shortly afterwards, which isn't too unusual (sometimes he'd cry for a minute or two). True to form he only cried for a few minutes, then it was quiet. I was so proud of him for listening to me and staying in bed. About 30 minutes later I went in to check on him. But he wasn't in his bed. So I thought maybe he was playing with his toys in the closet.

2 Week update

On Tuesday Gavin turned two weeks old! My how time flys! Of course our first week was nearly spent in the hospital it felt like; so really he's only been home just over a week. But it sure has been fun. We had his two week appointment on Tuesday.

Birth Weight: 7lb 11oz
Home from Hospital weight: 7lbs
2 week appointment weight: 8lb 6oz!!!

He's a growing boy!

I've officially given up on breastfeeding though. The first week in the hospital the nurses all told me how great Gavin was latching on. But by the time I got home from the hospital I had (TMI ahead) very sore nipples and scabs on them from improper latching on. After one breastfeeding season when I stopped feeding Gavin and one of the scabs was gone only to have the poor guy throw up what looked like dried blood and scabs. I started pumping to help heal. After about 5 days of pumping I finally felt like I could start breastfeeding again. I called and made a appointment with a lactation specialtist and tried again. Of course Gavin latched on perfectly the first time for me. But he favored one breast over the other. The other one he wanted nothing to do with! Later that day I tried to breastfeed on my own with no success! I tried a few times after that but I had anxiety every time I had to feed the poor little guy and it just wasn't fun for either of us. One or both of us ended the session in tears! Breastfeeding shouldn't be a team sport, so the fact that I can't do it on my own only added to me quitting. I feel like a failure as a mother not to be able to give him that "good start". But pumping has also proved to be a challenge. I'm exhausted most of the time, so trying to motivate myself to either get up 1/2 hour before Gavin or stay up 1/2 hour or more after he goes to sleep is hard. Plus with Zack and Gavin I don't have much time to pump. I also wish that I was able to breastfeed for the money aspect of it! Formula is expensive, and I do not look forward to a year of buying formula... ugh! Oh well I have to do what I have to do. I just hate that I feel like I've failed at something else with Gavin (I wasn't able to do the VBAC as planned either).

Here are a few pictures that I took of Gavin this week:

Brothers on St. Patrick Day. I didn't have time to get Zack a St. Patties Tshirt (bad mommy)

I absolutely love this picture it's like he's looking at something

Long Week

Tomorrow my baby will be a week old. Posting will probably be slow for the next little while as having two kids under the age of 2 is going to be a juggling act for Bob and I.

Gavin Delton Speakman was born on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 4:32 am. It was a long night for us. To make a 22 hour story short. We went to the hospital at 7:15 am on Monday 3/1/10 to be induce. Our plan was to have VBAC. 21 hours later dialated to a 9, cervix still not thinned and Gavin facing the wrong the direction the doctor said we should call it and to the C-Section. My doctor has been behind us 100% so to have her think it would be best to do the C-section we took her advice. 30-something minutes later our little guy was here!

The hospital stay was LOOOONNNNGGG! We were finally released Saturday Morning. We were hoping to be realeased a day earlier but Gavin had jaundice and the doctors thought it would be best if we both stayed the planned day... Grrr. I was so ready to go home, the hospital room was so boring (and lonely in the evenings and nights).

Here are some pictures so far of our little guy and his big brother.

7 lbs 11 oz 22.5 inches

First outfit in the hospital. He had the cutest dinosaur feet.

The first time I saw Zack after his baby brother was born. I nearly cried, he looked so much older! And he brought his mama flowers!

Zack loves to hold Gavin. He still wont say his name, but he does call him baby. He'll sit on the the couch and say me, me. Which means he wants to hold his little brother. But you have to watch out the minute he's done holding him he pushes him off his lap... gotta be quick.
